Acanthus spinosus

Spiny Bears Breech (Oyster Plant)

Categories: Herbaceous Perennial

Mysterious 3 ft. tall wands of snapdragon-like flowers rise above the imposing mound. Long lasting and excellent for arrangements, each white-lipped blossom is anchored by a green-gray bract and nearly hidden by a decorative, hood-like purple calyx.

More About Acanthus spinosus

  • clump-forming perennial which is grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its architecturally bold flower spikes
  • Features pure white, snapdragon-like flowers enclosed (hooded and subtended) by spiny, reddish-purple bracts and arranged in vertical rows on substantial flower spikes which rise well above the foliage mound

Spiny leaves set this apart from other Acanthus species and add a tropical feel to the garden. The bold foliage is further enhanced in early summer when stiff flower spikes bearing hooded gray-purple flowers rise 2-3' above the leaves. Plant in well-drained soil in part shade
