Hydrangea is a valuable genus of some 100 species of shrubs and vines grown for their large and very showy flower heads. Hydrangeas are at their best in summer and fall—a quiet time for most woody plants—and are worth having for that reason alone.
Hydrangea that's hardy to Zone 4, is not bothered by pH, blooms midsummer to frost, and tolerates drought. Massive flower heads, bicolored pink and white, are held upright on strong red stems. The Royal Horticultural Society conducted a 5-year trial of 47 varieties of Hydrangea paniculata, and Pinky Winky was one of just 10 given their highest rating, an Award of Garden Merit.
